“David said to Gad, ‘I am in great distress ….’ “. His distress was all his own fault. He sinned in numbering Israel and had to suffer for his error.
Some of us only learn that fire is dangerous after we have been burned. The Bible makes it clear that sin and rebellion will not be allowed to go unpunished. None can presume that God will forgive without imposing restraint to prevent our doing it again. So for the sin of numbering Israel, David had to choose between three years of famine, three months defeat before his enemies or for three days plague by the sword of the Lord throughout Israel. These alternatives conveyed by Gad the prophet brought him great distress. It had been better if he remembered God’s injunction. Can we learn from his mistake?
