“king Ahaz … saw an altar that was at Damascus” [II Kings 16:10]

September 1, 2023

“king Ahaz … saw an altar that was at Damascus”. He journeyed to Damascus to visit the king of Assyria whose help he had sought in resisting armed incursions from the king of Israel and from the Syrians. While in Damascus he saw an altar which he liked so much that he sent the pattern of it back to Urijah the priest in Jerusalem and told him to get on and make a copy. This he did and it was waiting for Ahaz on his return. Ahaz then brought the brazen altar from the Temple and put it alongside his new altar (called the great altar) and used both for sacrifices to Jehovah.
Any wonder the Bible says, ‘He did not that which was right in the sight of the Lord’? The same is true today of any who attempt to mix the worship of the Lord with other religions – even the religion of materialism.
