“the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed” [Acts 13:12]

August 6, 2023

“the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed”. The deputy was astonished to find a statement of belief that was supported by a miracle. It was the Lord working, confirming His word with signs following, as Mark says at the end of his Gospel. Saul, at the beginning of his ministry, rebuked Elymas the sorcerer for withstanding the advance of the gospel, and he was stricken with blindness. Sometimes we look for a miracle to suit our own ends or to ease things for us. When it hurts we pray the Lord to remove the condition and so often the Lord graciously answers our prayer.

The importance of this miracle at Paphos was that it proved the truth of the gospel and the deputy believed. This was to happen repeatedly. The end of all testimony must be that those who hear and see come to believe.
