“they had argued about who was the greatest” [Mark 9:34(NIV)]

<b>“they had argued about who was the greatest”.</b>  It was an argument among themselves – Jesus had to ask His disciples what it was they were arguing about. We might easily be disappointed with them for indulging in such petty behaviour – as though to be among the chosen twelve was not enough, each wanted to be the greatest.

Wanting to be the greatest is a sentiment that is always with us. Jesus said if anyone wants to be first he should become the last and servant of all. Remember that the greatest of all was despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. The way to glory is the way of the cross. Carry your cross if you would wear the victor’s crown. Those who serve the Lord should have no need to jostle for position. Meet the Suffering Servant, Jesus and worship at His feet.
